San Diego Takes WCC Doubleheader Against Dons
It was a day of crazy hops and fielding high jinks as defenses looked appropriately foolish on April 1st at Benedetti Diamond. San Francisco hosted San Diego in West Coast Conference action and the Toreros picked up the sweep, taking game one by a final of 6-5 and won the prolonged nightcap by a final of 13-8 Saturday. Neither contest was a thing of beauty, as the Dons and Toreros combined for 10 errors with USD committing five - three in one inning - in the nightcap, but prevailed anyway. Senior southpaw Ian Perio (5-2) tossed a complete game in the opener, but suffered the loss as USF could not score on USD reliever Jared Hemus who pitched two scoreless innings and allowed just one hit in collecting his first save of the season. Perio was victimized by three untimely Dons' errors and only three runs were earned. Perio struck out seven and issued four walks. Senior infielder Tony Hurtado exploded offensively for a huge day and finished 6-10 (4-5 in game one) with a double and an RBI for USF's leadoff man. Senior centerfielder Dustin Delucchi drove in four runs and finished the day 5-10 with a pair of doubles. Notable for San Diego was senior infielder Kevin Reese who finished the day 5-9 with a pair of RBI and with the five hits moved one past former Torero standout Kevin Herde (1990-93) for first place on the USD career hits chart with his 264th career base hit. Game two featured six errors, five by the victors who out-hit USF 16-12. The Dons trailed 13-5 heading in to the ninth and the umpires attempted to call the game, but a protest by USF allowed the Dons a final opportunity and they took advantage of it launching two homeruns - a two-run blast by junior designated hitter Chad Soares (7) and a solo blast by senior catcher Rigo Lopez (3) - but the rally fell short. Freshman infielder Ryan Leahy hit his first career homerun, a solo shot in the eighth. Sophomore outfielder Jason Howard made a welcome return to the lineup for USF, especially with the tragic career-ending injury suffered by senior outfielder Pat Walsh who was hitting .412 on the season. Howard finished the day with a pair of hits and an RBI. Senior leftfielder David Wright hit a pair of homeruns (3) for the Toreros and finished the day 2-7 with four RBI on the day. USF hosts San Diego in the final game of the series tomorrow at Benedetti Diamond. First Pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
