Baseball Prevails In Marathon Game Against USD, 12-11
Sunday, April 2 was the day Daylight Savings Time took effect and San Diego and San Francisco would need every minute of light to cram 15 innings into five hours and 46 minutes of West Coast Conference baseball action at Benedetti Diamond Sunday. The Dons (18-14; 5-7 WCC) prevailed against the Toreros (19-17; 5-6 WCC) 12-11 in a game that featured every imaginable baseball-scoring device. Like a pair of heavyweights in a battle to the finish, the two teams combined for 10 errors, stranded 28 base-runners and used 11 pitchers out of the bullpen. The game saw a wild pitch on an intentional base on balls and more substitutions than a McDonald's. Senior closer Jeff Bowman entered the game in the 14th inning to play third base as the USF bench was completely exhausted of position players and answered the bell in the bottom of the 15th with a lead off single off of Mike Oseguera. Bowman, who collected his first career hit, also scored the winning run on the fifth error of the day by the Toreros. Sophomore pitcher Peter Dunkle (2-4) came on in the 11th and pitched 4 1/3 for the victory allowing no runs on three hits and struck out six. Oseguera (0-3) suffered the loss after allowing a run off four hits in five innings of extended relief. After three lead changes, USF rallied to tie the game at 11 after nine innings and each bullpen posted zeros on the scoreboard for five successive innings until the Dons finally broke through in the 15th frame. The game was the longest game in the history of Benedetti Diamond. There were numerous offensive heroes for USF led by Bowman's improbable at bat. Senior infielder Tony Hurtado (4-7, HR, 3 RBI) launched a solo homerun (1) in the eight and finished the weekend 10-18 with a double, homerun and five RBI. Junior leftfielder Danny Trumble (3-7, RBI), junior infielder Jared Carvalho and freshman Nick Guerra each went 1-3 with a double and a pair of RBI. For USD, senior outfielder Kevin Reese hit a three-run homerun (9) in the first inning and finished the day 2-5 with 3 RBI) and senior outfielder David Wright launched his third homerun of the series (4), a solo shot in the seventh and finished 4-7 with a pair of RBI.
USF returns to action Tuesday when they host the Tigers of the University of the Pacific at Benedetti Diamond. Game time is scheduled for 2:30.
