Senior short stop Jared Carvalho laced an RBI single into right field to score sophomore outfielder Nick Tarbat as USF rallied for a 6-5 win against Portland in West Coast Conference baseball action Sunday at Benedetti Diamond. With the win, the Dons (15-16, 5-8 WCC) complete the series sweep against the Pilots (16-15, 5-8 WCC) and remain undefeated (6-0) in league play on their home field.

Initially the game looked as though it might turn into a pitchers duel as neither team could score off USF junior right-hander Peter Dunkle or Portland’s Eric Hull as they combined for five scoreless innings to start off the game. The Pilots would get on the board in the sixth, as Matt Coleman would score on a two-base error. USF roared back to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the frame on a two run blast for junior outfielder Jeramy Janz (3).

USF’s two-run lead would not stand for long as Portland touched reliever Chris Gossert for three runs in the top of the seventh on RBI singles from Matt Allen and Matt Hollod. The Dons would answer and with three runs of their own in the eighth inning on a monster three-run homerun by freshman infielder Nick Cirbo (5). Portland was not done and tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the ninth on a towering homerun to right field by Hollod (4).

Pilot and Dons relief pitchers allowed just one run in the scoreless 10th inning. Freshman right-hander David Seccombe (1-2) pitched 3.2 innings of solid relief allowing just one run on two hits and struck out three in earning his first victory of the season.

Tarbat led off the 11th with a lead-off walk and advanced to third on a single by senior catcher Greg Moore, setting up Carvalho’s game-winning RBI single.

Steve Chamberlain (0-4) suffered the loss for the Pilots.

Moore (2-4), freshman infielder Armand Gaerlan (2-5) and junior designated hitter Steve Booth (2-3) each collected a pair of hits for the Dons, while Janz finished with two RBI and Cirbo finished with three. USF also got a strong start from Dunkle, who went 5.0 innings, allowing no runs on five hits and notched seven strikeouts.

USF returns to action on Thursday when they host the Gaels of Saint Mary’s in WCC play. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM at Benedetti Diamond.
