Baseball Falls To Portland 10-6
PORTLAND, Ore. -- Matt Allen and Nate Hare delivered a pair of early blows for Portland Sunday, leading the Pilots to a 10-6 West Coast Conference baseball win. Hare's bases-loaded triple capped a five-run first inning, while Allen's two-run home run was the big blow in a five-run third inning. Portland (17-14/6-8), had 10 of its 15 hits in the first three innings, nine in the first and third innings combined. Still, San Francisco (21-15/7-8), rallied with Danny Trumble's solo homer in the second inning, and tallied five times in the seventh to trail 10-6. The Dons stranded two runners in the eighth, and Portland reliever Kyle Bebout coaxed a game-ending double-play from Jason Howard in the ninth with runners at first and second. Gavin Hare, Cory Lunde and Josh Goff each had three hits for Portland, while Allen and Nate Hare each had three RBI. Lunde finished the three-game series 7-of-13 with three doubles. Portland's first six batters in the first inning reached base as nine batters stepped in the box. Lunde and Allen each had RBI doubles, and after Steve Jackson reached on an error and Michael Stewart was hit by a pitch, Nate Hare tripled down the left field line to clear the bases. In the third, Josh Goff led off with a single, moved to second on a groundout and to third on a wild pitch. Brock Griffin's strikeout was mishandled in front of the plate, and an alert Goff scampered home ahead of the throw. Gavin Hare then doubled and scored on Lunde's single, and Allen followed with his sixth home run of the year. Tony Blackhurst improved to 3-1 on the season for Portland, allowing four hits and two runs in six innings with six strikeouts. USF's Phil Polanco allowed five runs in the first on four hits, and dropped to 3-2 on the year after not recording an out. The final three of USF's six pitchers threw 4.2 innings of shutout baseball. Dustin Delucchi drove in three runs on a bases-loaded double in the seventh for USF, while Rigo Lopez joined Delucchi with two hits.
