USF Pounds 23 Base Hits 10 For Extra Bases

  • Box Score

USF erupted for 11 runs in the second inning and never looked back, cruising to a 24-4 non-conference victory against Sacramento State Tuesday at Benedetti Diamond. Every USF starter in the lineup scored a run in the second and only one failed to collect a hit as the Dons sent 12 batters to the plate.

San Francisco (22-15) punished Sacramento State (14-20) pitching and pounded out 23 base hits against five Hornet hurlers. Junior starter Matt Nielson (0-3) suffered the loss after allowing five runs (two earned) in one inning of a staff performance. Freshman reliever Daniel Della Maggioria (1-0) was credited with the victory after throwing three complete innings and allowed two runs off two hits and also struck out two.

Among USF's many offensive highlights were homeruns by junior All-American Tagg Bozied (9) who launched a three-run blast in the second in his second plate appearance of the inning. Bozied has 43 career homeruns and needs just three more to set the West Coast Conference career record.

Junior outfielder Danny Trumble (5) crushed a two-run homer in the first and two batters later, junior designated hitter Chad Soares (9) hit a two-run shot of his own and held the team long ball lead for an inning before Bozied left the year. Senior outfielder Dustin Delucchi (3-4, double, 3 RBI) pounded his 17th double of the year and sophomore infielder Jesse Foppert (3-3, triple, three RBI) also enjoyed big days at the plate.

As a team, USF knocked out 10 hits for extra bases, including three homeruns (Trumble, Soares, Bozied), two triples (Jason Heise, Foppert) and four doubles (Tony Hurtado, Delucchi, David Naber, Keali'i Lum). USF pitching stymied the Hornets and allowed just six base hits and the Dons bullpen recorded seven strikeouts.

USF returns to action this Friday in the first game of a three-game WCC series with Pepperdine. Game time is 2:30 PM at Benedetti Diamond.
