USF Baseball Places Two on 2007 ESPN Magazine/CoSIDA District VIII All-Academic First Team

May 10, 2007

(San Francisco) - Junior shortstop Tavo Hall (Albuquerque, NM) and senior outfielder Jonnie Knoble (Sandy, UT) were named to the 2007 ESPN Magazine/CoSIDA District VIII All-Academic First Team as announced today. It is the first time in program history the Dons have placed a pair on the list and the first overall first team selections since three-time All-American Tagg Bozied was honored as a junior in 2000. Both Hall and Knoble will advance to the national ballot for Academic All-American consideration.

Hall owns a 3.88 GPA in International Business, while Knoble turned in a 3.66 in Biology. San Francisco is the only school to have a pair of first team selections this season.

In addition to tremendous success on the field, Hall excelled in the classroom and the redshirt junior will serve as the class Valedictorian in the upcoming 2007 USF Commencement. Hall is the first USF student-athlete in nearly a decade to finish at the top of his class. A highly decorated student, Hall won the 2007 Charles Harney Award presented to graduating student-athlete with the top GPA and is a two-time All-West Coast Conference Gold Honors student. Off the field, Hall volunteered in projects to benefit Hurricane Katrina victims and breast cancer survivors.

A three-year starter for the Dons at shortstop, Hall suffered a season-ending injury April 14 against No. 9 Pepperdine. Last season Hall missed more than a month with a broken hand, but returned to help USF capture the first WCC Championship in school history and advance to the first-ever NCAA Regional.

Knoble, a fifth-year senior returned to the field this season after suffering a career-threatening back injury in 2006. A team leader since his arrival on the Hilltop, Knoble won the 2007 Sandee Hill Senior Graduation Award, for overcoming adversity in pursuit of academic and athletic excellence. For his efforts in the classroom, Knoble earned the Joe Kuharich Scholarship in 2005 and 2006.

This season, Knoble is enjoying perhaps his best season on the field and currently ranks third in West Coast Conference in steals (20). The Sandy, Utah native ranks third on the career stolen base chart with 59, and is the all-time leader in stolen base percentage (.867). Knoble also ranks eighth in career runs (127), 10th in at-bats (614) and 12th in hits (179). Off the field, Knoble volunteered in projects to benefit Hurricane Katrina victims and breast cancer survivors.
