Kevin Annis Named West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week
May 14, 2003 San Francisco's Kevin Annis tossed his first career complete game last Sunday as the Dons defeated Loyola Marymount 6-2 in their WCC finale to earn West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week honors. Annis tossed a shutout through six innings, striking out a total of six Lion batters to earn his fourth WCC win of the season. In only his fifth start this year, the senior silenced the bats of one of the conference's best hitting teams, throwing only 98 pitches and getting 67 of those across for strikes. The win gave the Dons their 17th conference win, the second highest league win total in program history. Annis, a native of Reno, entered the starting rotation for the first time in his career at Gonzaga April 11, 2003 and has gone 3-1 as a starter with 27 strikeouts in 32.1 innings of work. On the season, Annis leads the rotation with a 6-3 record to go along with a 3.68 ERA. Annis ranks second on the Dons in strikeouts (57), is third in innings pitched (63.2) and leads the staff in opposing batting average (.239). Coming into his senior campaign, Annis' career consisted of 27.3 innings of work with 25 strikeouts. The pitcher of the week honors are the first for Annis and the first for a member of the Diamond Dons pitching staff this season.
USF completes the 2003 campaign when they face Sacramento State in a three-game series beginning Friday May 16 in Sacramento with a 2:30 PM first pitch. The Dons host the Hornets Saturday in a 1:00 PM contest at Bendetti Diamond and return Sunday to Sacramento for the season finale at 1:00 PM.
