San Francisco Places Six on All-West Coast Conference Baseball Team
May 23, 2003 (Malibu, CA) - USF baseball had six players named to the 2003 All-West Coast Conference team for baseball as announced by the league office today. Senior designated hitter Ryan Sittauer earned first team selection for the first time after a breakthrough senior campaign. The Lynwood, WA native hit .362 during league contests to rank sixth among WCC leaders with seven doubles, triple, homerun and 18 RBI. Overall, Sittauer hit a team-best .353 with 14 doubles, two triples, a homerun and 28 RBI and hit .468 in his last 15 contests. Senior right-handed starter Kevin Annis earned second team selection after emerging out of the bullpen for a career year in 2003. The Reno native posted a 5-1 record as a starter with an overall record of 7-3 with a team-best 3.41 ERA and struck out 62 in 68.2 innings of work. Annis was named WCC Player of the Week after a complete game four-hitter at Loyola Marymount (5/11/03) and earned a relief victory at #6 Stanford at Sunken Diamond (4/1/03). Annis was also named USF's Pitcher of the Year. Junior shortstop Armand Gaerlan was also named to the second team after another successful season on the Hilltop. After missing 13 games at the beginning of the year after suffering a broken finger on his throwing hand, Gaerlan bounced back, ranking third on the team with a .325 batting average to go along with seven doubles, three triples, a team-best eight homeruns and 34 RBI. The Fremont native was stellar in the field committing just six errors in 43 starts at shortstop and helped turn 24 double plays. Three Diamond Dons also earned All-WCC Honorable Mention selection. Junior catcher Ryan Hanson (Los Alamitos, CA) made a big impact during his first year of baseball on the Hilltop. Hanson hit .329 with seven doubles, two homeruns and 31 RBI. A WCC Player of the Week after driving in four runs in consecutive games at Gonzaga, Hanson was outstanding defensively and did not commit an error the entire season while throwing out 21 runners. Junior infielder Joe Jacobitz (San Francisco) battled back from an early season back injury to bat .301 with seven doubles, triple four homeruns and a team-best 39 RBI in 2003. Jacobitz hit .354 during conference play and earned WCC Player of the Week honors during the season. Junior left-handed pitcher Derek Tate (Kennewick, WA) also was named to the honorable mention list after leading the team in appearances (25) in his first year at USF. Tate earned a pair of wins in 2003 with 27 strikeouts in 48.1 innings of solid relief.
