USF Baseball celebrated the 2004 season with a year-end banquet Monday May 24 at the Carnelian Room, atop the Bank of America Tower in San Francisco. The 10-member Diamond Dons Class of 2004 was honored for their careers and player and coaches awards were presented.

Current San Francisco Giant Jesse Foppert was on hand to present the USF Pitcher of the Year Award, renamed the Jesse Foppert Fireman of the Year Award in honor of the 2002 All-West Coast Conference Second Team selection.

Senior left-hander Derek Tate was named Pitcher of the Year after posting a 6-7 record with a 3.77 ERA with 79 strikeouts. The Kennewick, WA native posted three complete game victories against league opponents (Portland 2x and Pepperdine) and finished the season with back-to-back complete game wins against the Pilots and Waves.

Senior infielder Chris Genung earned the Dante Benedetti Award presented to the team MVP after turning in one of the most dominant offensive seasons in program history, hitting .361 with a single-season record 87 base hits. Genung also shared the single-season lead in doubles (22) and his 52 RBI were the seventh-highest yearly tally.

Senior catcher Nick Cirbo earned the Greg Moore Award for most inspirational player. Sophomore Andrew Smith won the Green and Gold Glove Award presented to the best defensive player after a strong season primarily at third base. Freshman infielder Blake Nelson earned the Yellow Dog Award presented to the top newcomer after leading the freshman hitters with a .314 average with six doubles, homerun and 19 RBI in his first season on the Hilltop.
