Pair of Hawaiian Diamond Dons Named To The 2002 Freshman All-American Team
June 6, 2002 (Tucson, AZ) - A pair of USF freshmen from Hawaii earned selection to the 2002 Collegiate Baseball Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American Team released today. Outfielder Royce Fukuroku and infielder Cy Donald capped their first year of baseball on the Hilltop with each earning honorable mention honors. The Freshmen All-American selections mark the sixth and seventh selections for the Diamond Dons in the last five seasons and eighth and ninth for USF baseball since the 1995 campaign. Fukuroku batted a .316 clip for the Dons with nine doubles, two triples, four homeruns and 33 RBI in 2002 and hit .324 during West Coast Conference action to earn All-West Coast Conference Second Team honors as a utility player. In addition, the 5-3 utility player from Maui tied a single-game record with a 6-for-7, seven RBI game against Loyola Marymount. Fukuroku had solid power numbers for the Dons and rated third on the team in extra-base hits (15) and on-base percentage (.415).
Donald finished the season batting .325 with five doubles, triple and 19 RBI to go along with 17 walks. The Miliani, HI native picked it up during league action, batting at a .352 pace with four doubles, triple and six RBI for the Dons and earned All-West Coast Conference Honorable Mention selection for his efforts. Donald batted .391 when leading off an inning and played the second half of the league season as the team's leadoff hitter. USF Freshmen All-American
