Poreda's USF Career Resume in PDF Format
(San Francisco) - USF left-hander Aaron Poreda was selected by the Chicago White Sox with the 25th overall selection in the first round of the 2007 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft on Thursday. Poreda is the highest draft pick in school history for the University of San Francisco baseball program. Jesse Foppert (2001) and three-time All-American Taggert Bozied (2000) were both second round selections. A two-time All-West Coast Conference First Team selection, Poreda departs the Hilltop as one of the top pitchers in program history, owning a share of third place in career victories (17), ranks sixth in career ERA (2.61), seventh in career strikeouts (169) and games started (33), and owns eighth place in innings (245.0). "I'm excited to be drafted by the Chicago White Sox," Poreda said. "I look forward to learning more about them and their organization and I'm excited about becoming a part of the White Sox family." As a sophomore in 2006, Poreda played a key role in elevating the Dons to the first WCC title in school history, followed by the team's inaugural NCAA Regional berth. Poreda made history in the 2006 Lincoln Regional, winning the first NCAA Regional game in program history, a 5-1 elimination game victory against No. 6 National Seed Nebraska. Poreda is the second USF player selected by the White Sox in the last two seasons as former teammate Stefan Gartrell (2003-06), currently with the Class A Kannapolis Intimidators, was selected in the 31st round last year. Poreda believes his time at USF played a tremendous factor in his development on and off the field. "USF has given me all the tools to be a great pitcher. I just have to continue to work and remember the lessons they have taught me," Poreda said. With the selection in the first round, Poreda becomes the first Don taken in the opening round of a professional first year draft in any of the four major sports (MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL) since 1982. The southpaw is the first WCC player selected in the first round since Pepperdine LHP Noah Lowry, currently with San Francisco, was selected by the Giants with the 30th overall pick in the 2001 draft. LMU LHP Billy Traber, a 16th overall pick in the 2000 draft, was the last WCC player drafted higher than Poreda. Poreda is the seventh Diamond Don selected in the first 10 rounds of the Major League Draft since 2000 and is the fourth USF player selected in the top three rounds in the last eight years.
