Dons' Poreda to White Sox in first round

June 8, 2007

As excited as Aaron Poreda was to be the Chicago White Sox's first-round draft pick on Thursday, he was just about as disappointed that he was passed up by the Giants three picks earlier.

Poreda, USF's junior left-handed pitcher who went to Campolindo High, was taken by Chicago with the 25th pick overall during the first day of baseball's first-year player draft. One draft projection had the Giants taking Poreda with the No.22 pick. But San Francisco selected right-handed pitcher Tim Alderson from Horizon High School in Scottsdale, Ariz.

"I was hoping the Giants would take me," said Poreda, who said he grew up a Giants fan. "They had their chance. I was very disappointed they passed on me. That's their fault. I have a new favorite team now."

Poreda still may have stayed in the Bay Area had the White Sox passed on him. The A's had the 26th selection and were believed to be interested in Poreda.

Poreda is the first USF baseball player to be selected in the first round.
