Former Don Jesse Foppert won in his AAA debut with the Fresno Tuesday night as the Grizzlies defeated Omaha 6-3.

Foppert (1-0), who recorded 74 strikeouts over 61 1/3 innings with a 2.79 ERA in 11 starts with Shreveport of the Class AA Texas League, yielded two runs -- one earned -- and five hits with eight strikeouts and walk issued over six innings for the win.

Douglas Clark had an RBI and Cody Ransom belted a two-run homer in the seventh inning for Fresno, which has won three straight home games.

Manny Aybar recorded a hitless ninth to collect his 17th save.

Foppert's call-up continues a remarkable rise for the right-hander, who in his first season of pitching at the collegiate level during the 2001 campaign at USF, posted an impressive 8-4 record with a 3.75 ERA and recorded 112 strikeouts while issuing 38 walks in 98.1 innings of work. His eight victories and 112 strikeouts each rated second in the Diamond Dons single-season record books.

When the Giants selected Foppert with the 74th selection in the second round, he became the highest pitcher chosen from the University of San Francisco. Foppert earned 2001 All-West Coast Conference Second Team honors behind Pepperdine All-American Noah Lowry, a first round selection of the Giants in 2001 and currently pitching for the San Jose Giants (A).

Last season in his first season in the minor leagues, Foppert posted an 8-1 record with a glittering 1.93 ERA with 88 strikeouts in 70.0 innings of work with the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes in rookie ball in Oregon.
