Foppert Wins Again
July 5, 2002
Read the Grizzlies' recap from the Fresno Bee FRESNO, Calif. - Jesse Foppert tossed seven solid innings and Marco Pernalete recorded his third career pinch-hit home run to lift the Fresno Grizzlies over the Las Vegas 51s, 6-2. Foppert (2-1), who retired 12 of the final 15 batters he faced, yielded one run and three hits, striking out nine, to pick up the win and lower his ERA to 1.88 in three Class AAA starts this year. Pernalete belted a two-run shot in the seventh inning to give his team a 5-1 cushion and now has two longballs on the season, both of which have come as a pinch hitter. Guillermo Rodriguez and Cody Ransom each collected two hits and drove in a run for Fresno, which has taken four of the five meetings against Las Vegas this year. Joe Thurston and Phil Hiatt each homered in the loss for the 51s, who fell to 16-18 in games decided by three or more runs. Dennis Springer (3-7) gave up five runs -- four earned -- and eight hits over seven innings in defeat, dropping to 0-4 in his last six starts.
