Dons Professional Baseball Update
As the summer continues, we here at USFDons.com wanted to check in on some former Dons and see how they are doing in professional baseball. Here is a quick rundown of 12 ex-Dons in pro ball. Class of 2008: Right-handed pitcher Evan Frederickson, drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers as a compensation pick in the first round, is currently with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in the Class-A Midwest League. In 19 games (10 starts) Fredrickson is 3-5 with a 4.64 ERA. In 64.0 innings, the Oak Hill, VA native has struck out 59 opponents. The Timber Rattlers are currently 46-46 and sit in fifth place in the Midwest League Western Division. 2009 Stats:
Second baseman Joey Railey, drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 21st round, is now with the Fort Wayne TinCaps (Class-A, Midwest League) after spending time with the Lake Elsinore Storm (Class-A Advanced, California League) and the Eugene Emeralds (Class-A Short Season, Northwest League) this season. In Fort Wayne, Railey has played in two games and is currently 0-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base, and a run scored. In Eugene, Railey batted .310 (9-for-29) in seven games, with a double, an RBI, four runs scored, four walks, and a stolen base. With the Storm, Railey had an RBI and a stolen base in one game. Railey’s TinCaps are 63-29 and sit in first place in the Midwest League Eastern Division. 2009 Stats:
Left-hander Matt Baugh, drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 29th round, is currently with the Tri-City Dust Devils (Class-A Short Season, Northwest League). In six starts, Baugh is 0-2, 7.71 ERA. In 23.1 innings, he has struck out 20 and walked just six. The Dust Devils are 19-10 and sit in first place in the Northwest League East Division. 2009 Stats:
Outfielder Kyle Morgan (36th Round – Pittsburgh Pirates) has seen time with two teams this season, starting out with the State College Spikes (Class-A Short Season, New York-Penn League) before being promoted to the Class-A West Virginia Power of the South Atlantic League. For the Spikes, Morgan batted .224 (15-for-77) with four doubles, a triple, three homeruns, 17 RBI, 13 runs scored, one walk, and three stolen bases. In just one game with West Virginia, Morgan is 1-for-4, with that one hit being a big one - a two-run homerun. The Power are 38-54, last place in the South Atlantic League Northern Division. 2009 Stats:
Class of 2007: San Francisco’s highest ever draft pick, lefty Aaron Poreda (1st Round – 25th overall; Chicago White Sox) is currently the only former Don in the Major Leagues. He was promoted to the White Sox roster on June 9, 2009. He made his debut three days later in Milwaukee. Against the Brewers, Poreda tossed 1.2 innings of relief, allowing just one hit and striking out three batters, including the first batter he faced to close out the seventh inning. Overall with Chicago, Poreda is 1-0, 2.45 ERA in 10 games (all in relief). In 11.0 innings, he has struck out 12, and walked eight. Opponents are batting just .231. At 47-44, the White Sox are second in the American League Central Division. Prior to being called up, Poreda was with the Birmingham Barons (Double-A, Southern League), where he went 5-4, 2.38 ERA in 11 starts. In 64.1 innings, Poreda had 69 strikeouts, 35 walks, and opponents were batting just .206. 2009 Stats:
Outfielder Luke Sommer (30th Round, Chicago Cubs) has, moved to the pitching mound. This year, with the Daytona Cubs (Class-A Advanced, Florida State League), the Canby OR native is 1-2, 2.27 ERA and one save in 32 games (all in relief). In 47.2 innings, Sommer has struck out 42 and walked just eight as opponents are batting .281. Daytona is 45-44, third in the Florida State League North Division. 2009 Stats:
Class of 2006: San Francisco’s highest draftee after the 2006 season, outfielder Scott Cousins (3rd Round, 95th overall, Florida Marlins), is currently with the Jacksonville Suns (Double-A Southern League). The Reno, NV native is batting .249 (83-for-334). In 89 games, he leads his team with 23 doubles, 49 RBI, 43 runs scored, and 19 stolen bases. He also had two triples, nine homeruns, and 31 walks. The Suns are third in the Southern League South Division at 50-45, 12.5 games back of former teammate Stefan Gartrell and his Birmingham Barons. 2009 Stats:
San Francisco native Stefan Gartrell (31st Round, Chicago White Sox) is having a fantastic season with the Birmingham Barons (Double-A, Southern League). He is batting .288 (66-for-319). In 88 games, Gartrell leads the team with 66 hits, 4 triples, 17 homeruns, 64 RBI, and 66 runs scored. He has also stolen five bases. The Barons sit in first place in the Southern League South Division at 62-32. 2009 Stats:
Class of 2005: The only draftee from 2005 still playing, Nick Pereira (10th Round, San Francisco Giants), started the season with the Connecticut Defenders (Double-A, Eastern League). In three appearances, Pereira was 0-1, 4.91 ERA. In 11.0 innings he struck out seven and walked 10. He is currently a member of the AZL Giants (Rookie, Arizona League), but hasn’t pitched. 2009 Stats:
Class of 2001: Drafted in the second round by the San Francisco Giants in 2001, Jesse Foppert was traded to the Seattle Mariners in 2005, and then re-signed as a free agent by the Giants in 2005. He is currently listed on the Reserve list, but did play with the Connecticut Defenders (Double-A, Eastern League). So far this season he is 0-3, 6.27 ERA in 10 appearances (eight starts). In 33.0 innings, Foppert has 22 strikeouts. 2009 Stats:
Tagg Bozied, drafted in the third round by the San Diego Padres, has had an eventful career in the minor leagues, even making a trip to Taiwan to play with the Brother Elephants. He is currently back in the states, playing for the Indianapolis Indians (Triple-A, International League), an affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. In eight games, he is batting .200 (6-for-30) with two doubles, two homeruns, three RBI, three runs scored, and one walk. The Indians are 44-50, third place in the International League West Division. 2009 Stats:
Class of 1996: Joe Nelson, drafted in the fourth round by the Atlanta Braves is on the current Tampa Bay Rays Major League roster. In 37 games (all in relief), Nelson is 3-0, 4.37 ERA. In 35.0 innings, he has two saves and 32 strikeouts. The Rays are 51-42 and in second place in the American League East Division, 4.5 games behind Boston and New York. 2009 Stats:
