(San Francisco, CA) - In 2006 the Dons broke school records for wins with 39. In 2007 and 2008 USF saw two players selected in the first round of the Major League Baseball Draft. Already this fall the Dons recruiting class from 2009 has been named in Collegiate Baseball's Top 50. Building on the recent successes on the field, in player development and in recruiting, head baseball coach Nino Giarratano announces the signing of two new Dons to National Letters of Intent.
Daniel Chavez (RHP) San Mateo, CA / Serra High School The two-sport athlete knows his way around more than just his Serra High School campus. He is already very comfortable on the Hilltop. His USF roots began long ago with visits to camps and more recently visits to family. Danny is the cousin of Dons first baseman Matt Chavez and the brother of sophomore Annica Chavez. The signing ensures that a long-time member of the USF Baseball Family remains a Don. Perfect Game USA recognized Chavez on their 2009 pre-season Draft Follow list. The Dons hope this late-bloomer makes it to the Hilltop as Coach Giarratano feels he has the ability to pitch in one of a variety of roles. His versatility and potential will add to an experienced staff in 2010. Few freshmen command the strike zone and the USF geography like Daniel Chavez.

Tom Barry (OF) Tinley Park / Phoenix College Tom Barry joins the Dons via Phoenix College and Mt. Carmel High School in Chicago. His numbers are almost as impressive as his story of work and intangibles. He batted .313 for Mike Rooney and Phoenix College last season. In 53 games he led the team with 24 extra base hits (11 doubles and 13 triples). When Kurt Palmer took over the Phoenix Baseball Program this year he surely appreciated Barry's ability to be a difference-maker. "Tom Barry will make any team he plays on better and will be an instant leader and great example of a champion," said Coach Palmer. Tom entered his freshman year as a 145-pounder with average speed. He's become a very good runner, stealing 13 bases last season. Barry has developed as a hitter with gap power and an athlete who can play multiple positions in the middle of the field. The Dons look for Tom to provide leadership and speed to go along with an already athletic and experienced outfield. With the loss of seniors Drew Johnson and Zach Kim, Tom will have ground to cover.
