Diamond Dons Sign Two to National Letters of Intent

Nov. 25, 2008

(San Francisco, CA) - In 2006 the Dons broke school records for wins with 39. In 2007 and 2008 USF saw two players selected in the first round of the Major League Baseball Draft. Already this fall the Dons recruiting class from 2009 has been named in Collegiate Baseball's Top 50. Building on the recent successes on the field, in player development and in recruiting, head baseball coach Nino Giarratano announces the signing of two new Dons to National Letters of Intent.

Daniel Chavez (RHP) San Mateo, CA / Serra High School
Daniel Chavez' signing brings a quick right arm and a great competitor to the program. The six-foot two inch, 155-pound right-handed pitcher has the ability to throw three pitches for strikes with feel for each. During his junior season Chavez helped Pete Jensen's Serra Padres win the WCAL. In 22 2/3 innings Chavez went 3-0 with 25 strikeouts and posted a 1.23 ERA.

The two-sport athlete knows his way around more than just his Serra High School campus. He is already very comfortable on the Hilltop. His USF roots began long ago with visits to camps and more recently visits to family. Danny is the cousin of Dons first baseman Matt Chavez and the brother of sophomore Annica Chavez. The signing ensures that a long-time member of the USF Baseball Family remains a Don.

Perfect Game USA recognized Chavez on their 2009 pre-season Draft Follow list. The Dons hope this late-bloomer makes it to the Hilltop as Coach Giarratano feels he has the ability to pitch in one of a variety of roles. His versatility and potential will add to an experienced staff in 2010. Few freshmen command the strike zone and the USF geography like Daniel Chavez.

Giarratano on Chavez:
"Danny is a wonderful addition to the USF Baseball program. He has an electric arm that will continue to improve as he gets older and stronger. He fits as the type of pitcher and person who has been successful in the program, an outstanding learner and person. He should make an immediate impact on the team and the staff in the fall of 2009."

Tom Barry (OF) Tinley Park / Phoenix College
Tom Barry joins the Dons via Phoenix College and Mt. Carmel High School in Chicago. His numbers are almost as impressive as his story of work and intangibles. He batted .313 for Mike Rooney and Phoenix College last season. In 53 games he led the team with 24 extra base hits (11 doubles and 13 triples).

When Kurt Palmer took over the Phoenix Baseball Program this year he surely appreciated Barry's ability to be a difference-maker. "Tom Barry will make any team he plays on better and will be an instant leader and great example of a champion," said Coach Palmer.

Tom entered his freshman year as a 145-pounder with average speed. He's become a very good runner, stealing 13 bases last season. Barry has developed as a hitter with gap power and an athlete who can play multiple positions in the middle of the field. The Dons look for Tom to provide leadership and speed to go along with an already athletic and experienced outfield. With the loss of seniors Drew Johnson and Zach Kim, Tom will have ground to cover.

Giarratano on Barry:
"Tom is a great player from an outstanding program. He has an opportunity to start in the outfield for us. No matter where he plays his presence in our program is going to help keep alive a tradition of great athletes and great people."
