Byrd played a key role as the Tigers advanced to back-to-back Big West regular season titles followed by consecutive NCAA Tournament second round appearances (2004-05). In Byrd's final season in Stockton, he helped Pacific to the best record in program history at 27-4 in 2004-05.

Before his stint with the Tigers, Byrd spent two seasons as an assistant coach under Phil Mathews, helping the Dons to a 31-27 record from 1999-2001.

After a standout career at Villanova University, Byrd played professional basketball in the Atlantic Basketball Association and in Switzerland.

He began his coaching career as an assistant coach at his alma mater, St. Joseph Notre Dame High School in 1996. Calvin was a McDonald's All-American in 1989 at St. Joseph's. After two years at the high school level, Byrd moved on to his first NCAA Division I coaching job at UC Irvine during the 1998-99 season.

Calvin and his wife Jodie live in the East Bay with their daughter Alexa, and son Miles.
