Coach Billy Reid, a former Dons' co-captain on the great Bill Cartwright teams in the late seventies, is in his third year as an assistant at USF.
Reid, a two-year letterwinner, helped lead the team to a 44-14 record and two consecutive NCAA berths in his Dons' playing days.
After graduating from USF, he went on to play professional basketball for the Golden State Warriors for two seasons. He then traveled overseas and played basketball on numerous professional teams, including teams in Taiwan, the Philippines, South America, Italy, Spain and France.
After his 11-year career in professional basketball, Reid went on to coach teams in France for six years, where he was the head coach for teams in Avignon, Nantes, Reimes and Caen.
Prior to coming back to USF last year, he held assistant jobs at Rhode Island and Duquesne. Coach Reid, a native of the Bronx, New York, has devoted his time to many basketball camps around the world. He has helped coach at the City-Wide Camps in New York, Five-Star Camp in Pittsburgh and at various Nike camps in Europe. Reid was very excited to return to USF and is excited about the future of the program. "I've learned a lot from Coach Mathews," said Reid. "Especially the way he handles strategy and tactics during the games. "His compassion for his players is something I've really learned to appreciate." For the Dons, Reid handles scouting, recruiting and scheduling for the program. He has extensive contacts in Africa, Cameroon and Europe. On the court, Billy will be in charge of player development. He is working on his masters in coaching. Billy lives in San Francisco with his wife, Laurence, and their five children: William III, Malcolm, Elijah, Teddy and Noah.
