Jerome Gumbs scored a career high 27 points and pulled 11 rebounds and Tyrone Riley added 17 points, nine in overtime, to pace the University of San Francisco Dons to a 74-70 victory over Portland Saturday evening at War Memorial Gymnasium. USF, one of two WCC teams with a perfect home record (10-0 at War Memorial Gym), did not have an easy game. The Dons (12-6, 3-2 in the WCC) trailed by four at halftime after Gumbs ended the half with a three pointer, giving him 15 first half points. Portland (13-8, 2-4) was paced by 20 points by Pooh Jeter and 12 by Darren Cooper. The Dons needed a big shot to get to the extra session and Riley provided it, hitting a three to tie it with :26 seconds left. The Pilots tried to hold for the last shot by Jason Gaines made a big steal that prevented an attempt. "It was a huge shot for Riley," said Dons' head coach Jessie Evans. "He's one of our leaders and due to foul trouble he had just five points with a minute left in regulation. But he stepped up and made a huge three and in overtime had nine points, three rebounds and a blocked shot. "Jerome had an awesome weekend for us with double-doubles against Gonzaga (18 points, 13 rebounds) and his 27 points and 11 boards tonight. He was a warrior." The Dons might have had an easier time in the game but made just 13 of 23 free-throws. USF's John Cox added ten points for USF, who visits Santa Clara next Thursday and St. Mary's next Sunday.
