SAN FRANCISCO -- The University of San Francisco men's basketball team ran into a tough Portland team on Thursday night at War Memorial Gym.
Portland posted a 74-58 win to improve to 4-2 in the West Coast Conference and 13-7 overall. USF fell to 7-14 and 2-4 in conference play.
After a back-and-forth first half, with the Pilots taking just a five-point lead into halftime, the Dons immediately dug themselves a hole to open the second half. USF turned the ball over on four of its first six possessions and an offensive foul ended another possession.
The Dons pulled to within 41-39 just five and a half minutes into the second half, but the Pilots responded with a barrage of 3-pointers to take control of the contest once and for all.
Portland exploded into a 17-7 run, which included five 3-pointers in a matter of three and a half minutes. Four of those triples came from junior guard Jared Stohl, who finished with a game-high 22 points, which included six 3-pointers.
The Pilots were without leading scorer Nik Raivio, who missed his third-straight game with an Achilles injury, but Portland didn't skip a beat.
The Dons never found an answer for the Pilots' one-two punch of Stohl and point guard T.J. Campbell. Campbell slashed his way into the lane and to the basket for 19 points and five steals.
USF totaled just 12 points in the final 11 minutes of the game; connecting on only two field goals during that stretch. The Dons also turned the ball over 18 times and Portland scored more than a fourth of its points (22) off turnovers.
Rashad Green paced the Dons with 14 points while Dior Lowhorn added 12 points and nine rebounds.
USF Men's basketball concludes its three-game homestand Saturday, January 30 when it hosts defending West Coast Conference Champion No. 8 Gonzaga in a 6:30 PM contest at War Memorial Gym in a game broadcast live on the Dons flagship station Green 960. Saturday's contest has been designated a "Gold Out" Game so wear your Gold and cheer on the Dons.
