Dons Top UC Irvine in Bracketbusters 76-62; Visit St. Mary's in Big Monday Contest

San Francisco went on an early 12-0 spree coasted to a 76-62 win over UC Irvine in a ESPNU BracketBusters game Saturday afternoon at War Memorial Gymnasium. The Dons, who visit St. Mary's Monday night, won for the fifth time in their last six games.
USF (12-15) of the West Coast Conference was paced by Alan Wiggins 19 points. Point guard Manny Quezada added 17 points and six assists.
UC Irvine (12-16) of the Big Sky conference shot only 35.4 percent from the floor even factoring in a 9-for-18 game by Australian forward Nic Campbell. He hit six three-point shots in 14 attempts.
The Dons' 12-point run began with Wiggins converting a pass from Quezada for a basket with 17:41 to go in the first half. That brought USF to within one at 5-4. A three-point shot by Johnny Dukes put the Dons up for good.
USF shot 52.7% from the floor and 47% from three point range. USF is 10-2 when hitting 50% or better of its shots.
A lay-up by Antonio Kellogg with 14:05 to play in the first half completed the run with the score 14-5. Kellogg chipped in 14 points in 27 minutes off the bench.
USF led 43-24 at half, a 19-point margin they equaled once with 6:51 to go on a lay-up by Dukes for 70-51. Dukes finished with nine points. Coach Jessie Evans went to his bench frequently throughout the game.
