USF Tops LMU 66-61, Earns Fourth Seed For WCC Tournament

Paced by a career best equaling 19 points by Alvin Broussard and 18 by James Bayless USF clinched the number four seed in next week's West Coast Conference tournament by defeating Loyola Mary mount 66-61 Saturday night at the Hilltop.

USF (17-13, 7-7 WCC) led from start to finish in earning its 17th win of the season. Andre Hazel added 10 assists for USF while Tyrone Riley added 14 points.

LMU (14-13, 5-9 WCC) who upset St. Mary's Thursday night was paced by 14 points from Charles Brown and 11 by Wes Wardrop. Leading scorer Sherman Gay was held to just nine points.

The Dons will play the winner of the first round matchup of the fifth seed Santa Clara and San Diego (8th seed) in the second round of the league postseason tournament at approximately 8:00 p.m. next Saturday night at Santa Clara's Leavey Center.

It was senior night and USF seniors Broussard and Bayless came through hitting a combined 14-21 from the floor, with Broussard nailing 8 of 11 shots.

USF led by 14 in the first half and by 13 in the second but the Lions kept fighting back.

The Dons looked like they would make an easy game of it through the games first 1minutes. USF scored e first six points of the game and raced outo a 21-7 lead with eight minutes left before intermission. Loyola then outscored 10-0 over the next five minutes before Tyrone Riley made a baseline jumper to give USF a 23-17 lead t the break.
