Basketball Drops Season Opener To Seton Hall, 87-79
Nov. 16, 2001 SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Darius Lane scored 27 points and hit seven three-pointers to lead Seton Hall in an 87-79 victory over the University of San Francisco at Memorial Gymnasium Friday night.
Lane matched his career mark of three pointers, missing only one, giving new head coach Louis Orr a season-opening win. Orr took over as head coach this season after spending a year at the helm at Siena.
Andre Barrett had 17 points and Ty Shine added 11 for the Pirates.
Shamell Stallworth led the Dons in scoring with 23 points. Tucker, the teams leading returning scorer, had 18 points and 15 rebounds.
Seton Hall opened the second half by reeling off 10 unanswered points, giving the Pirates a 23-point lead at 56-33. The Dons closed the deficit to seven on Stallworths three-pointer with 44 seconds left that made it 81-74. It was as close as the Dons could come.
Seton Hall shot 71.4 percent from the three-point line in the first half, led by Lane, who sank five out of six three-point attempts. Lane, the Pirates leading returning scorer, led the team in first-half scoring with 15 points.
The Dons closed the deficit to 31-25 on Darrell Tuckers free throw with a little more than three minutes left in the half.
Seton Hall forward Mauricio Branwell capped first-half scoring with two, putting the Pirates up 44-29 at the end of the half.
