USF Falls To UC Irvine, 72-59

Dec. 15, 2007

Final Stats

Irvine, CA - Junior guard Manny Quezada scored a game-high20 points, but San Francisco could not overcome turnovers as UC Irvine collected a 72-59 victory Saturday night in non-conference action at the Bren Events Center. The Dons (4-6) committed 21 turnovers and the Anteaters (4-5) capitalized.

San Francisco (4-6) lost a 10-point lead in the first half and led 46-45 with 10:26 left in the game. The Anteaters took the lead for good when Patrick Sanders scored on a lay-up with 9:54 left.

San Francisco got as close as three points, 51-48, before UC Irvine went on a 21-11 run to put the game away.

In the first half, the Dons built a 10-point lead with 9:01 left after a 12-7 run capped by a Manny Quezada jumper.

UC Irvine erased the deficit with a 16-0 run to take a 29-24 lead on a jumper by Sanders with 4:47 left in the half.

Quezada scored 20 points and Dior Lowhorn added 12 points and seven rebounds to lead San Francisco.

Senior guard and Orange County native Danny Cavic scored five points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds playing in front of nearly 100 family members and friends, before fouling out of the contest. Junior forward James Morgan scored a career-high six points with two rebounds in 20 minutes.

San Francisco's woes at the free throw line continued Saturday. The Green and Gold converted on just 7-of-18 from the line against the Anteaters. Through seven games, USF shot at .775 (86-111) clip to rank second in the West Coast Conference. The last three games have been much uglier at the stripe as the Dons have shot a truly dismal .519 ( 42-81).

Kevin Bland led a season-high five Anteaters in double-digit scoring with a 14-point, 12-rebound double-double. Darren Fells scored 14 points and Patrick Sanders added 12 as the Anteaters beat the Dons for the first time in seven meetings.

San Francisco continues its five-game road trip Tuesday, December 18 when they travel to Long Beach. Tip-off against the 49ers is set for a 7:00 PM start in the Pyramid.
