Dec. 29, 2008
Chestnut Hill, Mass. - USF concluded its five-game December road trip with a 84-62 loss at Boston College Monday night in non-conference action at the Conte Forum. The Dons (7-7) could not overcome a slow start as the Eagles (11-2) improved to 9-0 on their home floor.
Senior guard Manny Quezada became the 29th player in USF history to reach 1,000 career points. The New York native finished with 1,005 points, good for 29th place on the Dons all-time scoring chart after recording 17 points against the Eagles in front of more than 30 family and friends in attendance.
Junior forward Dior Lowhorn scored a team-high 18 points, while freshman forward Angelo Caloiro added 11.
USF emerged from intermission with energy and went opened with a 10-2 run to trim the BC lead to five at 44-39 with 16:36 remaining on a Lowhorn three-point play. Battling some foul trouble, the Dons could not sustain the run with a 54-48 lead at the 12:09 mark, the Eagles responded with a 16-5 run and never took their foot off the accelerator.
San Francisco got a slow start to the first half and trailed 15-8 after five minutes. The Dons closed to within five points at 15-10 on a bucket by Caloiaro at the 14:16 mark, but the Boston College went on a 12-2 run to take a 27-12 lead. USF suffered through a scoring drought of 5:50 as the Eagles opened up a 29-12 lead with 7:09 left in the opening period.
San Francisco was unable to cut the BC lead to single-digits, but managed to close the gap to 13 points at recess, 42-29. Quezada had a team-high 10 points at the intermission, while Lowhorn added seven. USF struggled from the field, despite having some open looks and converted on just .357 (10-28) in the period.
After playing just one home game in December, USF kicks off a three-game homestand Saturday, January 3 when it welcomes Cal State East Bay to the Hilltop. Game time against the Pioneers is set for 7:00 PM at War Memorial Gym.
