SAN FRANCISCO -- The matchup between the University of San Francisco men's basketball team and Loyola Marymount holds more significance than just a win up for grabs.
USF (10-15, 5-5) hosts Loyola Marymount (13-12, 4-5) at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 13 at War Memorial Gym. It will be senior night for the Dons as they honor seniors Blake Wallace, Dior Lowhorn and Dontae Bryant in a special ceremony before the game.
The Dons hold a one and a half game lead over the Lions for fourth place in the West Coast Conference. A win against Loyola Marymount would give USF some serious breathing room in their quest for a first-round bye in the WCC tournament.
If USF wins, that would force Loyola Marymount to win three of their last four games, with the Lions hosting Gonzaga and Portland and traveling to San Diego and St. Mary's, in order to pass the Dons. The Lions would also have to have the Dons lose all three of their games at Santa Clara, Gonzaga and Portland to finish off the season.
Loyola Marymount comes into the game riding a bit of hot streak, having won three of its last four, including a 73-67 win at Santa Clara on Thursday night.
USF won the first meeting this season against Loyola Marymount 70-67. The game went down to the wire with Rashad Green tipping in basket off a missed free throw with nine seconds remaining to seal the win for the Dons.
The Dons began that game shooting 4-for-18, but never fell behind. It was USF's first WCC road victory of the season.
Loyola Marymount is last in the WCC in scoring defense, allowing 75.7 points a game, but it does lead the conference in steals with 7.6 per game.
Sophomore Drew Viney is fourth in the league in scoring with 17.2 points per game and fifth in rebounding with seven boards a game. Junior Vernon Teel is also in the top 10 in the WCC in scoring with an average of 14.4 points that puts him at No. 8.
SAN FRANCISCO PARTICIPATES IN THE 2009-10 JESUIT BASKETBALL SPOTLIGHT: USF is proud of its rich Jesuit heritage and the Dons will compete in no fewer than seven games against fellow Jesuit schools during the 2009-10 season. San Francisco squares off against Loyola Marymount Saturday, February 13 at War Memorial Gym in a Jesuit school series dating back to the 1920's. San Francisco is taking part in the Jesuit Spotlight Project for the second consecutive season, using Jesuit basketball to raise awareness of the outstanding education available at the nation's 28 Jesuit colleges and universities.
