Santa Clara Defeats Dons 63-52
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Steve Ross had 15 points and 10 rebounds as Santa Clara managed to beat San Francisco 63-52 in the West Coast Conference Friday night despite shooting just 29.5 percent from the floor. Brian Jones had 15 points and freshman Kyle Bailey added 14 for Santa Clara (15-11, 7-4). The Dons (11-15, 4-7) had been on a hot streak, winning four of their last five, but they were hurt by 22 turnovers. Ali Thomas led San Francisco with 16 points, including a key 3-pointer with 2:31 left to bring the Dons to within 58-50, the closest they'd come in the second half. But Thomas fouled out, and the Dons' momentum fizzled. Darrell Tucker added 13 points for San Francisco. James Lee had 10 rebounds but committed 12 of the Dons' turnovers. Santa Clara took a 33-20 lead into halftime. It was the fewest points by a Broncos' opponent in the first half this season. The Broncos dominated the Dons, taking a 19-8 lead midway through the first half on Justin Holbrook's free throws. San Francisco did not score for a full five minutes in the half, finally breaking through on Tayo Akinsette's layup with 6:27 to go. Hondre Brewer had two blocked shots to give him 97 this season, breaking Edgar Jones' WCC record of 96 set with Nevada in 1978.
Jones, who attempted 17 shots from the floor, set a Santa Clara record for career field goal attempts with 1,408, surpassing Londale Theus, who
had 1,395 from 1976-80.
