USF Men's Basketball Closes 2010 Regular Season in Pacific Northwest

USF TRAVELS TO THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST: San Francisco kicks off the final week of the regular season Thursday at Portland before taking on league-leading No. 13 Gonzaga on Saturday. Winners of five of its last six, USF looks to salvage a season split against the Pilots who have taken three straight against the Dons. Portland split in Southern California last week winning at Pepperdine (83-62) before falling in overtime at Loyola Marymount (77-68). The Pilots are 10-2 at the Chiles Center this season.
DONS IN THE WCC:
- With two WCC games remaining, USF has more than doubled its 2009 league win tally (7) and average 70.2 ppg after scoring just 61.7 ppg last year
- USF's Bay Area products - Angelo Caloiaro (San Jose), Dior Lowhorn (San Francisco) & Kwame Vaughn (Oakland) combining for 41.0 points,15.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists per league game
- USF out-rebounding opponents 35.8 - 33.0 rpg
- San Francisco 4-1 in games decided by five points or less during WCC play
- Dons attempt 22.4 free throws per WCC game. In 2009 USF averaged just 20.9
- In 12 league games, seven Dons have reached double-digit scoring and eight players have pulled down at least five rebounds
- USF's seven WCC triumphs are the most since going 8-6 in 2007
LOWHORN FOURTH ON SCORING LIST: Preseason All-American Dior Lowhorn continues to charge up the USF career scoring lists and became the 30th USF player to surpass 1,000 career points in the Green and Gold with 22 points at Portland (1/15/09). Lowhorn passed former USF All-American and NBA Don Winford Boynes (1975-78/1,702) for sole possession of fourth place on the list against Loyola Marymount (2/13/10). Lowhorn enters Thursday's game at Portland with 1,731 career points in 87 games for a 19.9 points per game average. Three-time All-WCC pick Darrell Tucker (1999-03) sits in third place with 1,805 points.

SCOUTING PORTLAND: The Pilots enter the final week of the West Coast Conference season at 8-4, following a Southern California road split. The Pilots thumped Pepperdine (83-62) before suffering an overtime loss at Loyola Marymount (77-68). Winners of seven of its last 10, Portland owns an overall record of 17-9, highlighted by quality victories against Oregon (88-81), UCLA (74-47) and Minnesota (61-56). UP averages 72.9 points on .469 shooting, including a .404 clip from beyond the arc. Senior guard T.J. Campbell quarterbacks the Pilot offense, averaging 13.8 points, on .440 (55-125) from deep to go along with a team-high 5.5 assists. Senior forward Robin Smeulders (12.6) and junior guard Jared Stohl (11.7) also add double-digit scoring. Eric Reveno is in his fourth overall season as the top Pilot and owns a 54-67 overall record as a Division I head coach - all at Portland.
UP NEXT FOR THE DONS: After tackling Portland Thursday, USF closes the 2010 regular season when it heads to Spokane to face defending West Coast Conference Champion No. 13 Gonzaga on Saturday. Game time is set for 5:00 PM at the McCarthey Athletic Center in a game televised live in the Pacific Northwest by Fox Sports Northwest (no Bay Area coverage). The Dons won the first meeting this season, dispatching the No. 13/8 Bulldogs 81-77 (1/30/10).
