Sweet Revenge - Men's Basketball Downs The Pilots, 68-49, Host Gonzaga Sunday
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Darrell Tucker matched his career-high for a third straight game, scoring 22 points to lead the University of San Francisco past Portland 68-49 Friday night. Tucker went 6-for-11 from the field, including 3-for-3 from 3-point range and made 7-of-8 free throws in exceeding 20 points for the fifth game in row. Kenyon Jones added 13 points for the Dons (19-7, 7-6 WCC), who equaled their highest win total since reviving the basketball program in 1985. San Francisco, which has won six of the last eight, concludes the regular season by hosting Gonzaga on Sunday. The Dons will then head into next weekend's WCC Tournament as either the fourth or fifth seed, locking them into a first-round matchup with Santa Clara, the tournament host. Portland (10-16, 4-9) lost for the 11th time in 12 games on the road and ranks as a No. 6 tournament seed, pending Saturday's regular season finale at Santa Clara. Ryan Jones scored 18 points to lead the Pilots and Troy Collins added 10. Up by 10 at the break, San Francisco saw its lead dwindle to 39-32 after Portland, triggered by Jones' fast-break layup, put together an 8-0 run. But the Dons answered with a run of their own. James Lee shook loose inside for a driving layup to ignite the 11-0 burst that carried the Dons to a 50-32 lead with 11:35 left. Tucker and Ali Thomas each connected from 3-point range during the flurry, punctuated at its finish by Jones' thundering dunk off a feed from Chris Barideaux. San Francisco maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way. Tucker scored 12 of his points in the first half when San Francisco took 31-21 lead. The Pilots, struggling to find the range, made just 6-of-20 first-half shots (30 percent). Overall, they were outshot by the Dons 55 percent to 39 percent.
Portland was down 11-10 after Phil Dejworek made a pair of free throws
but the Dons scored eight straight points capped by Tucker's 3-pointer
to go in front 19-10. Thomas and Tucker each added 3-pointers in the final
4:30 of the first half to help the Dons maintain the edge.
