The Continental Basketball Association announced today that former USF Dons and Yakima Sun Kings swingman Damian Cantrell has been named the 2002-03 CBA Newcomer of the Year. The 6-5, 233 lb. University of San Francisco ('98) product averaged 16.2 ppg and led the league with 12.8 rpg in his first CBA season.
Not only was Cantrell a force on the boards, leading the CBA with 27 double-doubles and 4.4 offensive rebounds per-game, but he was also deadly from long range, nailing a league-best 40-87 (.460) shots from the three-point arc. His .564 (221-392) field goal percentage ranked seventh in the CBA.
The Oxnard, Calif. native was particularly hot during the months of January and February when he earned all of his season-high, four National Conference Player of the Week awards.
He participated in the Orlando Summer Pro League with the Detroit Pistons last summer, and spent the previous two seasons in Argentina. At San Francisco, Cantrell helped lead the Dons to the 1998 NCAA Tournament, their first appearance since 1982, behind his 11.1 ppg and 9.8 rpg.
The CBA Newcomer of the Year award was voted on by CBA Head Coaches. Gary Steelheads guard Bryant Notree was second in the balloting, Dakota Wizards guard Malik Dixon was third, and Grand Rapids Hoops guard Alex Scales ranked fourth. To be eligible players must have played in 24 (1/2 of the 48 game schedule) games, must be in good standing with the CBA, must not be a rookie, and must not have played in the CBA before the 2002-03 season.
