Damien Cantrell Named All-CBA First Team
March 18, 2003 Former USF basketball star Damien Cantrell was named to the Continental Basketball Association All-League First team today as selected by CBA head coaches. Cantrell played for USF during the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons and was a member of the 1998 WCC tournament championship team. To be eligible players must have played in 24 games (1/2 of the 48 game schedule) and must be in good standing with the CBA. Coaches could not vote for their own players. Team members are listed below in order of votes received, beginning with the most. ALL-LEAGUE FIRST TEAM DAMIEN CANTRELL, Yakima Sun Kings - F, 6-6, 233 (San Francisco '99) - Earned Newcomer of the Year award and a league-high four National Conference Player of the Week awards...Placed second in MVP balloting...Led CBA in rebounding (12.8 rpg), offensive rebounding (4.4 orpg), and double-doubles (27)...Ranked second in three-point field goal percentage (.460, 40-87), seventh in field goal percentage (221-392, .564), and 17th in scoring (16.2 ppg). ANDY PANKO, Dakota Wizards - F, 6-9, 222 (Lebanon Valley '99) - Earned Most Valuable Player award, three Player of the Week awards, and voted to the National Conference All-Star Team (6 pts., 8 reb.)...Ranked second in scoring (22.8 ppg), sixth in rebounding (6.4 rpg), fifth in double-doubles (15), fifth in free-throw percentage (243-277, .877), and fifth in three-point shooting percentage (62-143, .434)...Posted Wizards' season highs in points (41), field goals made (16), field goals attempted (25), and three-point field goals made (5) versus Idaho on Feb. 11. BRYANT NOTREE, Gary Steelheads - G, 6-4, 200 (Illinois-Chicago '99) - Earned two Player of the Week awards, voted to the American Conference All-Star Team (21 pts., 9 reb.), and won the 2003 Slam Dunk Championship...Placed second in Newcomer of the Year balloting and tied for sixth in MVP balloting...Ranked fifth in scoring (21.3 ppg)...Posted Steelheads' season highs in points (37), field goals (16), and field goal attempts (32) versus Rockford on Jan. 17. RONNIE FIELDS, Rockford Lightning - G, 6-1, 205 (Farragut HS '96) - Earned one American Conference Player of the Week award and voted to the American Conference All-Star Team (6 pts., 3 reb.)...Placed third in MVP balloting...Became first player in CBA history to lead the league in scoring (23.2 ppg) and steals (2.6 spg).
JERALD HONEYCUTT, Grand Rapids Hoops - F, 6-8, 275 (Tulane '97) - Earned two American Conference Player of the Week awards and was voted to the American Conference All-Star Team (DNP- Injury)...Placed fifth in MVP balloting...Ranked third in scoring (22.6 ppg) and 11th in rebounding (7.6 rpg)...Posted Hoops' season highs in field goals (19) and field goal attempts (34) versus Gary on Dec. 3
