John Cox Presented With Father Dunne Award As MVP at USF Basketball Banquet

Senior guard John Cox, who led the West Coast Conference in scoring and wound up eighth on the all-time USF career scoring list, was named winner of the Father William Dunne Award as the team's Most Valuable Player during the USF Basketball Banquet Thursday night at the Carnelian Room in San Francisco.
Cox, presently playing at the Portsmouth Invitational in Virginia, averaged 20 points per game in helping to guide the Dons to the N.I.T. The Philadelphia native scored 621 points as a senior, the seventh best total in USF history.
Junior Jerome Gumbs was award the Arthur C. Zief, Jr. award as the team's Most Inspirational player and senior Tyrone Riley received the Bob Giron Coaches Award for his dedicated play on the court.
Other awards presented included the 6th Man Club Team Captain Award to senior guard Jason Gaines, the Most Improved Player award to sophomore forward Alan Wiggins, Jr., and the Outstanding Defensive Player Award to senior guard Andre Hazel.
Evans thanked the team's five seniors for helping to lead the team into postseason play in his first year.
