Dons' Coach Jessie Evans Celebrates One-Year Anniversary at USF
April 21, 2005
Friday, April 22nd marks the one year anniversary of USF Head Men's Basketball Coach Jessie Evans' hiring at USF.
In one year much has been accomplished by the program under Evans' guidance. He assembled a strong coaching staff that brought out the most in the returning players. Evans created a new enthusiasm for USF basketball and made great connections with alumni, coaches, media and fans. .
This led to a successful recruiting class that yielded three Bay Area prep stars (Drew Shiller, Omar Samhan and Jesse Byrd) and transfer Armondo Surratt from Oakland signing with USF.
During the season he guided USF to wins over five league champions (Gonzaga, Pacific, St. Joseph's, Denver and Penn) and one league tournament champion (Montana).
He led USF to its first win over nationally Gonzaga since 1998 and came within seconds of becoming the first team to beat them in the "New Kennel." He swept Bay Area rival Santa Clara in league play .
The quality of the team's wins propelled the team to its first postseason berth since 1998 and its first postseason win since 1979 over Sun Belt Champion Denver.
The team played an exciting style that enabled John Cox to lead the West Coast Conference in scoring. Season tickets are up, a challenging schedule is set for 2005 and things are bright for year two of the Evans' era!
