Anwar McQueen has been named men's assistant basketball coach at the University of San Francisco, head coach Phil Mathews announced today.

In addition Mathews announced the appointment of as Philippe Doherty as the team's administrative assistant.

McQueen, a native of Washington, DC, played four seasons of basketball for the University of California, completing his eligibility in 1997, appearing in 105 games, with 31 starts. At Cal, he received team academic awards three straight seasons. He played alongside Jason Kidd in the Golden Bears' backcourt, and also was a teammate of the Hawks' Shareef Abdur-Rahim in helping lead Cal to three NCAA tournaments. He served as team captain in 1996 and 1997.

He began his coaching career in September of 2000 as boys varsity head coach at Redwood High School in Larkspur, Calif.

McQueen replaces Paul Trevor, who left USF to take the top assistant job to new Cal State San Bernardino coach Jeff Oliver. Trevor was an assistant at the Hilltop for just one season. Oliver replaced former USF assistant Larry Reynolds, who is now head coach at Long Beach State.

Doherty, who served as head junior varsity coach at Sacred Heart Cathedral in the City last year. He played basketball at WCC rival Santa Clara from 1995-97 before graduating from UC Davis in 1999.

"We are very happy to have Anwar and Philippe join our coaching staff," said coach Mathews. "They are both people who are willing to work hard and help us continue to improve our program."
