Alan Wiggins, Jr. Receives San Diego Award From Coach Pete Newell

Pete Newell, the legendary for,er USF basketball coach and former San Diego Rockets general manager, presented Breitbard Star of the Month plaques on behalf of the Hall of Champions to USF's Alan and Stanford's Candice Wiggins during a break at his Tall Women's Camp on July 9 at Alliant University.
Newell was joined in the presentation by Anne Meyers, an instructor at Newell's camp who was an All-American at UCLA and 1976 U.S. Olympian. Candice Wiggins, a La Jolla Country Day alumnus and two-time All-American after only two seasons at Stanford, was a Star of the Month for January. Alan Wiggins, a Horizon and Poway alumnus, was an All-West Coast Conference honorable mention and USF's team MVP.
Newell won an NCAA title at USF in 1949, in the days when the NIT was as big or bigger than the NCAA tournament. He also won an NCAA title at Cal in 1959 in addition to NCAA runner-up finish in 1960 and coached the 1960 U.S. Olympic team to a gold medal.
Newell moved the sixth edition of his Tall Women's Camp, which draws campers from around the nation, to San Diego this year. The camp for high school players was July 8-10 and the camp for college players is July 11-13. His longer running and famed Big Man's Camp is held in Las Vegas.
