USF Men's Basketball Picked Fourth in West Coast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll

(San Francisco) - USF men's basketball was selected tied for fourth in the 2009-10 Preseason Coaches Poll as released today by the league office. The Dons captured 26 votes matched by ancient Bay Area rival Santa Clara.

After leading the WCC in scoring for the second consecutive season, senior honors candidate Dior Lowhorn was named to the Preseason Team, also for the second straight season. The San Francisco native was the first player to lead the league in scoring in overall and conference games in back-to-back seasons since Gonzaga All-American Jeff Brown accomplished the feat from 1993-94. Lowhorn averaged 20.1 points per contest and enters his final season in the Green and Gold ranked No. 17 on the career scoring chart with 1,240 points.

Gonzaga University was selected as the favorite to capture an unprecedented 10th consecutive West Coast Conference men's basketball regular season title in the 2009-10 WCC Preseason Coaches Poll. The Zags received six first place votes and tallied 48 points to narrowly edge out the University of Portland, which received the remaining two first place votes and collected 44 overall points. Saint Mary's College was picked third with 34 overall points, followed by the University of San Francisco and Santa Clara University, which tied for fourth with 26 points. Rounding out this year's poll is the University of San Diego in sixth place with 21 points, followed by Pepperdine University in seventh place with 13 points, and Loyola Marymount University in eighth place with 12.
