USF Basketball Hosts Successful 25th Annual George O'Brien Green and Gold Scrimmage

(San Francisco) - USF basketball hosted the 25th annual George O'Brien Scrimmage Saturday at War Memorial Gym in an entertaining afternoon of hoops on the Hilltop. The festivities opened with the women's "Green" squad posting a 34-20 win against the "Gold" unit and on the men's side, the "Green" rolled to a 79-42 victory.
In the women's scrimmage, the Green up-ended the Gold squad 34-20 in the 20 minute scrimmage. The two teams played to an 11-11 tie in the first half, before the Green exploded in the second frame, outscoring the Gold 23-9.
Vania Singleterry led the Green team with 11 points and five rebounds. The sophomore went 4-for-9 from the field while also adding an assist and a steal. Sophomore Rheina Ale added nine points, four assists and three steals. Freshman Ashey Boggs led the Gold team with nine points, while freshman Bailey Barbour pulled down five rebounds.
This season the USF roster features six newcomers to the program - two junior college transfers and four freshmen. Bolstered by Boggs' nine points, the newcomers on the USF team combined for 22 points and 13 rebounds.
Senior honors candidate Dior Lowhorn led all scorers with 32 points on 13-of-17 from the field to go along with eight rebounds and four steals. Sophomore guard Kwame Vaughn added 20 points and dished out a four assists, while freshman forward Perris Blackwell added 12 points and five rebounds for the "Green" squad.
Freshman guard Michael Williams paced the "Gold" team with 14 points and went 8-for-10 at the charity stripe, while freshman forward Nikola Stojiljkovic added eight, including a pair of deep 3-pointers. All told the seven newcomers for the Dons for the 2009-10 season scored a combined 52 points with 16 rebounds, 11 assists and five steals.
San Francisco shot a combined .333 from 3-point range (9-27) and both squads were deadly from the stripe converting on a .800 (36-45). The "Green" team held a whopping 28-11 rebounding advantage and committed just eight turnovers.
USF women's basketball hosts Vanguard Monday, November 2 in its first of three exhibition games. Tipoff against the Lions is set for 7:00 PM. The USF men play its lone exhibition of the season Saturday, November 7 against Cal State Monterey Bay. Game time against the Otters is set for 7:00 PM at War Memorial Gym.
