(San Francisco) - USF men's basketball welcomes Chico State to the Hilltop in the 2008-09 exhibition opener Saturday, November 1 in a 7:00 PM contest at War Memorial Gym. The Dons tackle Fresno Pacific Friday, November 7 in their final tune-up prior to kicking off the regular season at the 2008 Verizon Wireless Tip-off Classic in Hawaii against the host Rainbows Friday November 15.

QUOTING Rex Walters: "Saturday's game against Chico will give our guys a chance to play against someone other than themselves and allow us to see how we have progressed as a team since the start of practice. We've been working hard and I think our guys are looking forward to getting on the floor and getting some experience. We're very young and very inexperienced as far as their time playing for me. This will be a good opportunity and a great teaching tool."

SCOUTING CHICO STATE: The Wildcats enter Saturday's exhibition contest looking to regroup after posting a 7-20 record last season, including a 3-17 slate in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). First year head coach Greg Clink begins his first season in Chico and inherits just five returning letter-winners and two returning starters from the 2007-08 squad. Senior guard Justin Argenal averaged 6.0 points, 3.1 rebounds and a team-high 5.1 assists per game last season and ranks second on Chico State's career assist list with 461. Sophomore forward Rod Hawkins also returns for the Wildcats after averaging 6.1 points and 3.5 boards as a freshman.

USF vs. CHICO STATE SERIES RECORD: San Francisco owns an unblemished 8-0 record against Chico State during regular season contests. The last meeting between the two teams came during the 1988-89 campaign, a 99-86 triumph December 9, 1988.

HONORING BOBBY GIRON: The University of San Francisco Men' Basketball program, led by new Head Coach Rex Walters, will honor the memory and legacy of longtime equipment manager and USF Hall-of-Famer Bob Giron who passed away in June of 2006. A pre-game ceremony will take place before the 7:00pm start of this Saturday's exhibition game versus Chico State. The USF Men's Basketball program will also honor three very dear members of our family who passed, Hal DeJulio, Dick Raffetto and Art Zief, at individual ceremonies during the upcoming season.

DONS HEAD TO PARADISE: San Francisco opens the 2008-09 season when it competes in the 2008 Verizon Tip-off Classic, hosted by Hawaii at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Dons take on the tournament host Rainbows Friday, November 14 and then will enjoy an off day in paradise before taking on Texas State Sunday.
