Dons Win Close Game 71-68 Over Cal Poly
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Ali Thomas hit a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left to give San Francisco a 71-68 edge over Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo Saturday night. Trailing 68-65 with just less than a minute to go, Darrell Tucker hit a layup and a free throw to tie the game for San Francisco (5-4) before Thomas' shot. Brandon Beeson's attempt at the buzzer for Cal Poly (3-2) caromed off the rim. Tucker led the Dons with 28 points and nine rebounds. Thomas had 11 points and 10 assists for the first double-double of his career. The Mustangs were led by Chris Bjorklund with 17 points and seven rebounds. Jamaal Scott had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Trailing 39-38 at halftime, the Dons wrestled for the lead throughout the second half. Tucker gave them a brief 47-46 advantage midway through the period with a layup. The Mustangs took their lead to 55-49 on Scott's 3-pointer with 8:04 left. San Francisco again came back, taking a 62-61 advantage on James Lee's slam dunk at 3:54. San Francisco had an early first-half lead, but the Mustangs went ahead 16-14 on Watende Favors' 3-pointer at 13:41. The Dons took the lead back with Tayo Akinsete's 3-pointer 20 seconds later. Cal Poly led 26-21 midway through the first half, but again the Dons fought back with James Lee's slam dunk to go ahead 27-26. The lead seesawed back and forth from there, with the Mustangs taking the halftime lead. Akinsete added 12 points and eight rebounds for the Dons.
Favors finished with 15 points and five rebounds for the Mustangs.
