Dons Fall To Red Storm
NEW YORK (December 31, AP) -- Forward Anthony Glover scored 20 points and guard Alpha Bangura came off the bench to score 19, 17 in the first half to pace St. John's to a 92-77 victory over USF Sunday afternoon in New York City. The Dons led the game early 8-4 before St. John's went on a 17-4 run to take a 21-12 lead with 10:44 remaining in the first half. The Dons, who were paced by 17 points by Darrell Tucker off the bench, dropped their third consecutive game, all on the road to drop to 6-7 on the year. St. John's won their 26th straight game at Alumni Hall to improve to 6-5 on the year. The Red Storm have not lost on campus since January 15th of 1977 when Manhattan upset them. "What really concerned me today was our failure to compete," said Dons' head coach Phil Mathews. "St. John's came ready to play and we didn't. We have to play harder to break our losing streak." The Red Storm shot 58% against USF, the best by a USF opponent this season, while the Dons hit 49.2% of their attempts. The Dons started a completely new lineup with Chris Barideaux making his first start since being injured on November 25th. Alongside Barideaux was Andre Brown, the junior college transfer from West Valley who injured his wrist before the season and played for the first time as a Don last weekend at Pacific.
Tayo Akinsete started at forward alongside James Lee with Hondre Brewer at
center.
