Men's Basketball Defeats Fresno State In Double Overtime, 90-89
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ Shamell Stallworth hit two free throws with nine
seconds remaining in double overtime and San Francisco ended Fresno
State's three-game winning streak with a 90-89 win Saturday night, December 2.
Although San Francisco's Nick Tarbat missed a pair of foul shots after he stole the ball from the Bulldogs with a second left, it didn't matter. Darrell Tucker scored a career-high 31 points and 11 rebounds for San Francisco (4-3) before he fouled out near the end of regulation. Ali Thomas added 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Jeffries was one of five Fresno State (4-2) players in double figures with 24 points. The Bulldogs are 0-8 against the Dons in San Francisco. Thomas hit a pair of free throws with 17 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 74-all and send it into overtime. In the first extra period, the Bulldogs went up 82-76 on Shannon Swillis' slam dunk. But the Dons scored eight unanswered points to go up 84-82 on Thomas' 3-pointer. After a pair of foul shots by San Francisco's Tayo Akinsete and Fresno State's Dennis Nathan, Thomas tried to call a timeout _ but the Dons didn't have any left and they were charged with a technical foul. Porter made the shot, sending the game into the second overtime at 84-all. San Francisco led 39-32 at halftime on Tucker's jumper with seven seconds left. The determined Dons outplayed the flashier Bulldogs throughout the first half, taking a 10-point lead on Tucker's layup at 6:24 to make it 34-24. The Dons did not score for nearly five minutes afterward and the Bulldogs narrowed it to 34-29 on Porter's running layup at 1:53, but couldn't get any closer. Fresno State opened the second half with an 8-2 run on a pair of 3-pointers by Jeffries and a Porter jumper. The Bulldogs took a 44-4-3 lead on Porter's layup at 17:30. The Dons took back a 50-48 lead on Tucker's layup at 14:26, just before the Bulldogs lost Melvin Ely with what appeared to be an ankle injury. Fresno State rallied, going up 57-51 on Porter's layup, but San Francisco wrestled back a 68-63 lead with 3:02 to go on a Thomas foul shot. The Bulldogs took a 74-72 lead on Jeffries' free throw, but Thomas was fouled and made both his shots to tie the game at the end of regulation. |
