San Francisco Defeats Lewis & Clark 71-61



SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Freshman Nick Tarbat, a baseball player who joined San Francisco six games into the season because of injuries, had 22 points to lead the Dons to a 71-61 victory over previously undefeated Lewis & Clark Saturday night. The Dons (6-4) have won four of their last five games. Hondre Brewer had 11 points and 11 rebounds. Division III Lewis & Clark (6-1) was led by Colin Oriard with 18 points and six rebounds. John Mietus had 14 points and six rebounds. It was the Pioneers' first regular season loss in 23 games, dating back to last season. After a close first half, San Francisco took over in the second, going up 70-53 on Tarbat's layup with 4:06 to go. Tarbat is one of only three Dons with a 20-point game this season. He made six of eight 3-pointers in the game. Lewis & Clark jumped out to an early 16-8 lead on Josh Ulmer's two free throws at 13:48. But San Francisco scored 13 unanswered points, including Tarbat's two 3-pointers. A right fielder for the Dons' baseball team called upon when San Francisco lost both its point guards to injury, Tarbat had 15 points in the first half alone, all on 3-pointers. Lewis & Clark came back to tie it at 24 on Oriard's 3-pointer with 4:59 to play in the half, but the Dons got the lead back and held on to take a 36-33 advantage into halftime.
