Men's Basketball Loses On Last-Second 3-Pointer



SAN FRANCISCO (AP)(Feb. 17) - Scott Boardman's 3-pointer in the final seconds spoiled San Francisco's second-half rally as San Diego beat the Dons 70-67 in the West Coast Conference Feb. 17.

Tyler Field led the Toreros (15-10, 7-5) with 15 points, while Nick Greene added 13 points.

The Dons (11-16, 4-8), who trailed by as many as 18 points in the first half, were led by Ali Thomas with 20 points and eight rebounds.

Trailing 39-25 at the half, San Francisco climbed to a 51-50 lead on Thomas' free throws with 9:30 to go. The two teams kept it close and wrestled with the lead until Darrell Tucker tied it at 67 on a pair of free throws with 23 seconds left.

Boardman hit his 3-pointer with two seconds to go. After the clock ran out, his teammates swarmed him.

San Diego jumped out to a 22-4 lead, with the Dons hitting just one shot from the floor over the first 10 minutes of the game.

The closest San Francisco could get in the first half was 37-25 on Thomas' 3-pointer with 29 seconds left.

At the half, San Francisco retired Phil Smith's No. 20 jersey.

Smith, who played from 1971-74, averaged 21 points a game his senior year and went on to play for the Golden State Warriors. He was accompanied to the ceremony by former Warriors coach Al Attles.
