Dons Win Third Straight;74-60 Over St. Mary's

Darrell Tucker scored 17 points and Shamell Stallworth and James Lee scored 15 each to pace USF to a 74-60 win over St. Marys Saturday evening in Moraga.

The Dons, with their third straight win, move into a tie for fifth place in the conference standings with a 3-5 league mark, 10-13 overall. USF led wire to wire, scoring the games first seven points and never surrendering the lead.

After the Gaels climbed back to within one point at 22-21, the Dons again took control with eight straight points, seven by James Lee to go ahead to 30-21 and were in control.

"It is nice to get a win, even it was somewhat ugly," said Dons coach Phil Mathews while noticing 23 USF turnovers. "We needed to get these two wins this week and we did it. Now we have a very difficult game Friday in Spokane against a team still unbeaten in league," he concluded.

Once again, James Lee was a huge presence. He held St. Marys leading scorer Jovan Harris to just 10 points, and a total of 18 points in the two contests this week. Harris entered the week averaging 18 points per game in WCC play.

USF dominated the glass with Tucker pulling nine rebounds, Lee eight and Eugene Brown a career best seven. Brown also equaled his career scoring best with six points in reserve of center Hondre Brewer, who fouled out in just 15 minutes of action.

The Dons, who held their biggest halftime lead of the season 41-31 will take a three-game winning streak to Spokane to face undefeated Gonzaga Friday. USF was paced early by Darrell Tucker, who scored seven of USFs first 10 points and opened a 10-4 lead. St. Marys closed to 22-21, but USF rolled off eight straight to take a 30-21 lead.

James Lee scored 9 first half points and again held Gaels leading scorer Jovan Harris to just three in the first half.
