Dr. Gary Nelson Named Associate AD for Athletic Alumni Relations
Nelson Will Also Resume Duties as USF Director of Golf
(San Francisco) – After serving with distinction as the interim Athletic Director during the 2010-11 season, Dr. Gary Nelson will continue in the department as the Associate AD for Athletic Alumni Relations as announced today by USF Director of Athletics Scott Sidwell. In addition to his external role, Dr. Nelson will resume his duties as the Director of Golf, a position he held for the 2009-10 season.
"Gary did an outstanding job guiding the USF Athletic Department through a challenging time of transition and we look forward to him continuing to represent the Dons," Sidwell said. "Gary brings a passion for the university and is dedicated to elevating USF Athletics to national prominence."
USF enjoyed a solid season during Nelson's tenure as interim athletic director, highlighted by the Dons capturing the 2011 West Coast Conference Men's All-Sport Trophy for the second time in three seasons. Three programs – women's cross country, men's golf and baseball – captured WCC Championships. In addition, men's basketball turned in its best league season since 1982 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2011 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.
Prior to assuming duties as the Director of Golf, Dr. Nelson supervised the rebuilding of the men's golf program and in 2009 captured the program's first league title in 19 years. The 2009 WCC Coach of the Year helped land one of the highest touted recruiting classes in program history for the 2010-11 season which provided the foundation for USF's 2011 title run and subsequent NCAA Regional berth.
