Dons Shoot 281, Finish Fifth in Purple and Red Invitational

The USF men's golf team shot a tournament best score of 281 to finish fifth in the Purple and Red Invitational that concluded today at the Valley View Golf Course in Layton, Utah. The Dons were paced by freshman Jesse Galvon (Calgary, Alberta) who shot a 67 in the final round giving him a 54-hole total of 207, nine under par.
Galvon shot 70-70-67, three under-par rounds in a row in just his second collegiate event.
The team shot three rounds below 300, including the best score of the tournament, 281 in the final round to give them a 54-hole total of 871, in fifth place, four strokes behind co-host Utah. Santa Clara took the event with a total of 855, edging host Weber State by two strokes.
"We are very proud of what the team accomplished today," said Dons' head Dr. Gary Nelson. "For a young team to show great improvement in only its second tournament is huge. Even more remarkable is that our top three scores were recorded by freshmen."
One of the freshmen, Kurt Nino (Honolulu, HI) shot his first sub-par round for USF Tuesday, with a 71. Tony Toulon (Vista, CA), in his tournament debut, also recorded a sub-par 71 in the final round.
The USF team is off until October 10 when they visit the Meadow Club for the Alister MacKenzie Invitational.
