The USF men's golf team got off to a tough start Monday shooting a first round 292, but rallied with an afternoon 281 to place 14th after 36 holes of play in the Alister MacKenzie Invitational being held at the Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif.

The Dons, who shot well in the practice round, struggled in the early round Monday and wound up with a 573.

Kenny Adams paced the Dons with a 70-69 (139), with Jesse Galvon and Chris Cunningham each carding 144's.

"We have no excuses, because in golf you are what you are," said Dons' head coach Dr. Gary Nelson. "The scores are what you shot.

"That being said, we have been one of the most unlucky teams I have ever seen in my coaching and officiating career. We have had everything from balls rimming out to balls hitting the lip and bouncing into the trap.

"But, I'm confident the team will bounce back tomorrow. We didn't give up after the first round 292. We played three-under golf in the afternoon round and we are five strokes out of eighth place and nine strokes out of fifth."

Cal leads the tournament with a 543, ten strokes ahead of runner-up San Jose State. The tournament concludes Tuesday.
