(San Jose, CA) - USF men's golf posted a final round score of 301 at the 2006 Santa Clara Invitational, held at the Silver Creek Country Club. The Dons finished the tournament tied for second at 881 (298, 282, 301) in front of all four West Coast Conference competitors present, Gonzaga, Loyola Marymount, Portland and Santa Clara.
Junior Kenny Adams paced the Dons, finishing tied for ninth with a final score of one-over 217 (72, 72, 73). Senior Taylor Hobin was USF's next best finisher at a two-over 218 (74, 68, 76), good for a share of 11th place.
Sophomore Jesse Galvon led the field with three eagles. Hobin and freshman Connor McElyea also carded one eagle each, giving USF the tournament lead in eagles (5).
"The team never gave up today; they hung in and stayed ahead of every WCC conference team trying to come from behind. Kenny and Taylor brought a lot of mature experience to the course and helped us finish respectfully. This team has a lot of talent and we are getting close to turning a corner and playing comfortably and consistently as a team," said assistant coach Rich Yukota.
USF successfully finished 15 strokes in front of host and Bay Area rival Santa Clara, who bested the Dons by four strokes at the 2006 Alister MacKenzie Invitational October 9-10.
UC Santa Barbara captured the title with a score of 873 (300, 294, 279) and British Columbia fell from first place after the first day to share second place at 881 (290, 287, 304). Gonzaga finished in fourth place at 886 (296, 294, 296) and Boise State rounds out the top five at 889 (301, 289, 299). Gonzaga's Brandon Crick placed first individually with a five-under 211 (74, 68, 69).
The Dons return to action November 6-7 to compete in their last fall tournament, the Hawaii Fall Invitational in Honolulu.
Note: UCLA's "Blue" team was a non-scoring team and their results did not count in the final standings.
