USF Men's Golf Finishes Ninth at Kaua'i Collegiate Invitational

(Lihue, HI) - USF men's golf continued to struggle in the final round of the 2009 Kaua'i Collegiate Invitational Wednesday at the Pakea Golf Course. The Dons slipped to ninth on the three-day event on the par-72 course playing at 6,953 yards.
Defending team champion San Diego made it back-to-back, scorching the field at 35-under 829 (274, 276, 279), a whopping 30 shots in front of tournament runner-up James Madison at 5-under 859 (286, 287, 286). Sacramento State was third at 865 (290, 288, 287) followed by the host Rainbow Warriors at 869 (289, 284, 296). Surprising Gonzaga (290, 285, 296) and Utah (285, 291, 295) tied for fifth at 871.
Sophomore Ji Hwan Park was the top finisher for the Dons at 4-under 212 (72, 69, 71), good for a share of 10th place. Senior Chris Cunningham was the only other USF player in the top 30, finishing in a logjam in 25th place at 4-over 220 (69, 75, 76) and was the only Don beside Park to turn in a round at par or better in the event. San Diego's Alex Ching took home medalist honors with a 8-under 206 (69, 69, 68).
San Francisco looks to regroup when it plays its final event of the Fall season at the Saint Mary's College Invitational. The Dons are the defending champion in the event. Tournament play begins Monday, November 9.
