(Pebble Beach, CA) - USF men's golf shot an opening round 297 and sit in seventh place of the 2009 Saint Mary's Invitational Monday at Poppy Hills. Play was suspended due to darkness in the second round with most teams needing to complete four holes on the par-72 course playing at 6,873 yards.
San Francisco, the defending team champion has two players in the top-20, headlined by senior Domingo Jojola at 1-under 71, good for a share of fifth place. Jojola is the defending medalist in the event and fired a final round 70 for a one stroke victory, finishing at 207 (71, 66, 70). Fellow senior Chris Cunningham is tied for 16th at 1-over 73.
Denver posted the low score in the first round, shooting a 285 (-3) for a two shot lead over Oregon State (-1) and San Diego (-1), and a six shot lead over Nevada (+3). Denver's Espen Kaufstad shot 67 (-5) for the low score in the first round, which was three shots better than Ben Murray of San Diego, Diego Velasquez of Oregon State, Taylor Coffman of Nevada.
